I've got a few questions about using the 2090 controller with SCSI
drives. I've been using it for sometime with an ST506 drive (Miniscribe 20
meg) with no problems. I'm now trying to get a couple of SCSI drives (Hewlett
Packard 20 meg) added to my system.
I first created entries in my mountlist for RES3: and DH3: since the HP
controller was setup as SCSI device 1. Both entries had a UNIT=4 (what the
2090 manual said for the second SCSI device). Prep worked perfectly. I then
rebooted the 2000 and typed mount dh3:. When I typed "format drive dh3: name
HP" it instead started formating my ST506 drive. (Fortunately I have a fairly
current backup.) I then re-formatted the ST506 drive so that it was working
and went back to fiddling with the HP. I rechecked all the mountlist entries
and then re-ran prep (just in case something had gone wrong before). I then
rebooted, typed mount dh3: and then attempted a format. This time the format
hung after I pressed return to start the format. I repeated that several
times, sometimes re-running prep. No luck with any of them. I finally skipped
the reboot after running prep and the format worked. I copied over a couple of
hundred K of files as a test and everything was fine. Once again I rebooted.
I typed mount dh3: and then dir dh3:. The system locked. After a lot of
fiddling I determined that unless I ran prep and then mounted and used dh3:
without a reboot I couldn't access the drive.
I finally switched the HP from SCSI device 1 to SCSI device 0. I
edited my mountlist (UNIT = 3 instead of 4), prep'd the res portion, rebooted,
and then formatted dh2:. Absolutely no problems with any of this. I get dh2:
automatticlly every time I boot without having to mount it. This makes me
wonder if there is a problem with using SCSI devices higher than 0 (1 to 6,
since the doc indicates that 7 is reserved for the 2090 controller). Is there
a problem? Or did I just totally miss something? Do I have to have a SCSI 0
before I can use SCSI 1?
