Well, there are several parts to that question, and I'll try to cover them one
at a time: Is it possible to create software usable with current hardware?
Not really. The sampling hardware available is all 8 bit, as are the Amiga
playback voices. Getting the speed would certainly be possible with little
problem, although playback rates of that speed through the Amiga voices would
require software assistance, and thus slow down the Amiga processing speed
quite a bit.
Now, a hardware answer would do the job nicely. At minimum, a 16 bit DAC/ADC
pair would be needed (and would be best implemented on an expansion board for
the best speed). For a much more appropriate solution, the board would also
include a Digital Signal Processor and memory for it. That way, you could have
the board do all the sound generation work and leave the Amiga for other tasks.
The single 16 bit DAC/ADC pair would probably run about $200-$400 on an add
in board. Adding a Digital Signal Processor and memory could bring the price
to the $500-$1000 range, but then you'd have a *very* nice CD level audio
capability. (And to top it off, add a second DAC/ADC pair for stereo.)
Does such hardware exist? Currently, not that I'm aware of. I keep hearing
rumors and such, but nothing concrete. I want one, though… 🙂
Which probably doesn't help much in your decision as to what to do. It all
depends on what you really want to do with the hardware, I suppose.
