There is another option open to a local dealer that is not available to mail order. My local dealer is active in the local user group, which is pretty strong. The dealer helps support the user group (door prizes at group meetings, etc.) and the dealer learns who in the group knows what products. If a customer has a question that the dealer can not directly answer, he can contact somebody locally who does know. In fact, usually someone is already in the store. I think that this type of synergism helps both the users and the dealer and allows the dealer to do better, even with lower margins.
