Well, thing is by the time one gets around to doing "unwarranted" upgrades
of one sort or another on an A2000 or A500 they're probably out of warranty
already, so I don't see that being much of an issue. If _new_ users are
buying A500s and A2000s and trying to add in the functionality of things
like a 68030 board or the 1MB of CHIP RAM, well, they're competing with the
market for the A3000 by buying such upgrades — i.e. money spent on such
upgrades is money taken away from the investment in an A3000 with those
kinds of things plus the slots for 68040 boards, 24-bit graphics, etc.etc.
I think it's kind of analogous — though in a whole different league (i.e.
I'm not comparing an A500 to an IBM XT by any means!) — to the issue of
putting 286 or 386 boards into an XT machine… it may work, but at some
level it's a comparative kludge (though it's this hack-y kind of stuff some
of us really like the Amiga for in the first place). Better to save such
desires for the investment in an A3000. At least that's my thinking, and
why I don't go further than adding a few standard extras to my base A500.
That's money I'm saving for an A3000. 🙂
