Your experience was unfortunate but more than likely just coincidental. The TIC was developed by Jude Katsch — one of the original Amiga design team. Much time and development work went into the TIC to assure that there is no problems plugging and unplugging the unit in a live machine. It is much more likely that plugging and unplugging a joystick in a live machine would cause a static discharge or bend the pins.
