Have you tried power typing mode? It does some of what you ask but not everything. Yes, for user interface on the options, the current one is clumbsy. We have already redone this for the next version. Click/drag select turns out to have some problems which have pushed it lower on the list than other hotly requested features. The biggest one is the handling of tabs. There is debate on the best method of handling it but that should be resolved soon.
