The Amiga 500 is a great place to start. You start with 512K (which can be upgraded to more both internally and externally), an RF modulator (so you don't have to buy a monitor) and several software packages (including a wordprocessor). And you get all of this for UNDER $500.00! There are companies which supply hardware which can allow you to – in essence – turn your Amiga 500 into an Amiga 2000! There are also additions which will allow you to make your Amiga run both Macintosh software, Commodore 64 software *and* IBM software! You can have FOUR computers in ONE Amiga!! But don't get the Amiga for your kids. Get it for the whole family! It ain't just a game machine! The fact that it can multi-task (i.e. do more than one thing at the same time) makes in invaluable! The kids can use it for games and stuff (as well as help with school), you can use it for the budget or to keep recepies ready for quick access, the husband (I'm being presumptuous) can use it for making the workload lighter and faster or to listen to some classical music (such as the 1812 Overture – in its full 11+ minute length) fully orchestrated!
