I also have a VGA board for my BB, and like you find that I have to switch to it before the S-S does the binddrivers command (and start the BB) at least until the BB's ROM boot message appears on the screen, or else I get not VGA color, only VGA mono. I'm not real sure, but according to the manual I have for my VGA card (a generic Paradise card) the card trys to figure out what sort of monitor is hooked upto it, and adjusts itself accordingly. I'm assuming that if it boots up with the Amiga video being displayed, then the VGA board is in fact hooked to nothing, so the board can't figure out what sort of monitor it's hooked to and defaults to mono. Just how a board would know what sort of monitor it's hooked to is beyond me, but apparently that's what it's doing.
