version tells you what filesystem is handling the drive. It's possible to have multiple filesystems running at the same time. The rigid disk block of a hard drive can contain a filesystem. You might check there, to see if that's where its pulling the old filesystem from. There's two parts to the improved speed thing; one is the filesystem itself. The other is the way the filesystem organizes the data on the disk. The new 2.04 filesystem does a better job than the 1.3 filesystem. This is why you get a performance improvement by reformatting using the 2.04 filesystem. andy
