While it is essentially the same machine, in the sense it has most of the same chips, and processor, there are advantages to the 2000 that can't currently be easily had on the 500. Video slot for running the Toaster, CPU slot for easy processor upgrade, and 1 meg chip Ram. The 500 can be hacked to provide some of these features. Also the 2000HD is now down under $2000. I've seen street prices of about $1600. By the time you get to 1 meg chip ram, a Bodega Bay expansion chassis, and a 40 meg hard drive/hard drive controller, you are getting a lot closer to the 2000. I've seen 386 DX 33 mhz machines with 40 meg hard drives, and monitors for about $1500. They had 1 – 2 meg of ram, but in the cobbled up world of windows, it takes about 8 megs to have a smooth working system. But they definetly didn't come with windows or Wordperfect. Nor did they come with stereo sound, or smooth animation in anything beyond 320 x 200. At higher resolutions they got pretty ratchety. I spent $2500 on my 3000, including VGA multiscan monitor. I have MS-Dos boxes here, and at work. I much prefer my Amiga. – Well Whap! Me Silly….
