It was my understanding that the Fountain fonts are essentially the same
type of fonts that Gold Disk uses. Of course, while the "high" quality
mode is a terrific improvement, it does not match the output quality of
PPage using an HP laser.
From what I can see (and I am not going into kerning or anything
like that) the output appears as if it were not being scaled to full
resolution. Try outputting PPage Compugraphic fonts to an HP at 150 dpi,
and you'll see a remarkable similarity in quality.
Could it be that, due to the large installed base of 68000 driven
Amigas, that New Horizons does not output at the full resolution of the
device, but at a partial resolution (effectively)? I would imagine that
using high quality on a 68000 based machine would be pretty slow, and
possibly, slower if it were scaling fonts and outputting bitmapped pages
for 300 dpi.
Does this sound plausible? Although ProWrite is much improved with
the new version, and will remain my wordpro of choice, I still think that
New Horizons can do better, and encourage them to do so.
