VLT (and VLTjr) will run at up to 57,600 bps. However, you will have
trouble getting an unaccellerated A500 to run at over 19,200 bps. No
matter which program you use, you should avoid using 16 color (four
bitplane) or deeper screens. Three bitplane screens are probably okay;
two bitplanes are fine. The "deep" screens cut into the DMA time of the
system, which the built-in serial port needs at high speeds. Using a deep
screen will cause the serial port to drop characters. If you're using a
file transfer protocol like ZModem, the protocol should be able to recover
from this. It will slow down the overall throughput, though, since it
will have to be resending data packets.
VLT and VLTjr are both available here on CIS, as is a nice little
phone dialler (Select). (Select requires ARexx to run, however.) Hmm,
checking the libraries shows that the versions of VLT and VLTjr here are
old. I'll scrounge out my archives for the current version and upload
'em. (VLT has emulation for Tektronix 4105 and some 4107 terminal
graphics functions. VLTjr does not include this part. Otherwise, VLT is
a very nice vt100 emulator.)
