Maybe you're missing my point. We are in a supply and demand market. So
long as no one supplies an alternative CAD product at a lower price,
Autodesk can demand the price they want for AutoCAD.
So far, both Apple and IBM have tried their hands at competing against
AutoCAD. Both have essentially failed. Microsoft could conceivably try to
bring out a CAD program, but I have real doubts that they'll have much
success.
I'm not being cynical – it's just that after ten years, I still haven't
seen anyone compete effectively with AutoCAD. In fact, the only time I've
even seen AutoCAD bloodied was recently, in the NAVFAC bid. And it took
Intergraph to do the damage.
