One way to "solve" the problem is to foster the notion that it's unacceptable
to copy / use / borrow / test-drive-for- just-this-one-job any software that
your friend happens to have. Software producers are forced to view customers in
two ways: one as people they're trying to help, second as people who might rip
off their efforts. If there was a perfectly easy, perfectly flexible method of
protecting software, it would be built-in to every PC today. But there isn't,
and there may never be, so dongles (in various forms) will continue to exist.
I think it would be much more productive to exert effort thinking of better
(read: less intrusive) dongles.
