I think that something that would help is a **REAL** unique CPU ID. Our SIlicon
Graphics workstations have them on a ROM so you can change out the CPU module
for upgrades and repairs.
If you had a unique CPU ID all of your software would get keyed into it and
wouldn't run without an ID match. If you buy a new computer, you (since you are
the registered user) could arrange with the manufacturer for copies with a new
CPU ID – the best way might be a patch disk.
I'm not a big fan of SPA – I don't like the way that they operate on some of
their "raids" and I don't believe their estimates of money lost by piracy. On
the other hand, I DO NOT support the use of pirated software – if you are going
to use the software you should buy it. In theory dongles aren't a bad way to
protect software, but the theory too often does not translate into reality.
