Angus, The area of specialization that wedge failure and rock bolts fall under is called rock mechanics. I've had alot of education in the area, but have never seen a program that will do wedge failure calculations. My advice would be to contact a University that has a mining engineering department and ask to speak to their proffesor who deals in rock mechanics. They should be able to help guid your friend to any software. Schools that have mining programs are, Michigan Technological University, University of Kentucky, University of Missouri Rolla, Penn State, West Virginia, University of Arizona, Montana Tech, Colorado School of Mines, New Mexico Tech and University of Nevada.
