It's been a few years but William J Kroll and associates of the Albany Research Center of the Bureau developed a process for extracting ductile zirconium, pioneering a multi-million (maybe billion?) rare metals industry there. The city fathers back when the Gov'mnt was looking for a site for the center had to build a bonfire on the RR tracks to stop the train and convince them to look at the site. BTW, this was the site of the old Albany College that had moved to Portland and renamed to Lewis and Clark College in 1942.
