I'm a neophyte at video editing, and so far all I've done is dub from one VCR to another. I'd like to get more sophisticated and be able to title, assemble edit, insert edit, and make interesting transitions from section to section. Video effects would be nice, but not essential. I don't need broadcast quality, but I do want the results to at least equal VHS quality. I need advice on the best approach now and for the next couple of years. Edit controllers like Studio Magic would probably meet my needs for now, but none of my video recording/playback gear includes the synchronizing input/output feature. Currently I have a Mitsubishi U67 and a JVC HR-D566U. Both have infrared remote controls. I also have a 486DX2-66 PC with 8MB of RAM, a fast video card, a 730MB hard drive, 16 bit sound card, and adouble speed CD rom. My questions are: 1. Are there any good PC-based edit controllers which can work with either or both of my VCRs? Would a stand-alone edit controller be a better choice? 2. Should I pursue non-linear editing on my PC, and if so, what are some good add-on hardware and software options? 3. What about upgradability of currently available edit controllers or non-linear editing systems? Should I wait another six-months in hopes that improvements in price/performance will make better quality more affordable? Price is an isssue, and I'd like to keep the cost of additional hardware and software to less than $2,000. Suggestions and advice would be welcome.
