When I first got my 4000 (seems like eons) I also stood it on its end. I
had heard the Seagate drives didn't like the vertical position, but
ignored it as jabber. Guess what? After about six-seven months, the
drive went. Weird noises first, then intermittent failures to spin up,
then nada. Fortunately I got the drive replaced within warranty (in spite
of the broken seal – yes, I had the audacity of inserting my own memory
SIMM and Ethernet card). It's been horizontal ever since …
