Just to jump in to this discussion, I recently came across another
incompatiblity with an 68030. This time it is a hardware/software combo.
One of the NASA machines we support has a Ronin '030' in it. Of course to
run correctly, the 68000 has to be removed. This means you are always
running on the '030'. Well we found the that when we tried to use the
Perfect Sound digitizer that we could not digitize in stereo! Mono was
OK, but any stereo sample was clipped and distorted. Prerecorded Stereo
samples played back OK and the same digitizer worked fine on a 500.
After talking with SunRize and Ronin it was concluded that the problem was
caused by DMA contention between the two devices. We did try booting up
and not configuring the cache and 4 megs of memory, but this did not help.
The only thing that works is to remove the '030' board and replace the
68000.
They have now decided to buy a 500 setup to do digitizing on. So, chalk up
another incompatibility.
