Martin's story…
Before I moved from Fresno to Buffalo (1971) I asked my geology buddies if
there was risk of an earthquake in New York. They all told me no (being grad
students). The week after I got there it happened a Richter 4.0 (from a sink
hole if I recall). I sent them a message via my Ham buddies and the department
chairman put it up on the office bulletin board as that month's raspberry
award.
Har de Har Har if they killed USGS and then Georgia had a Loma Prieta style
hidden fault in a certain pinhead's district.
