I remember that WTK/CDK comparison. I didnt write it, but uploaded it from the
referenced areas. I think the original author is now working at Future Vision
(makers of Sapphire 3d rendering board). It is a bit dated, as both products
have been improved since April 93. WTK is now available as a Windows product
and CDK has (finally) shipped an updated version.
I did a review of CDK that was published in Software Development (Miller
Freeman Pub) in Dec 93. It wasnt a glowing review, but did have some nice
things to say about CDK (and some sharp jabs). I havent seen the latest CDK,
but have WTK/Windows.
However, my current favorite VR products are VRLib and VRT3. The former is a
freeware VR program you can get in Bernie Roehl's new book "Playing God.
Creating Virtual Worlds with Rend386" (Waite Group ISBN 1-878739-62-X. It is
the latest incarnation of the freeware REND386 program and includes not only
the basic VR renderer but an interpreted Object Oriented Animation system
called BOB. The book/disk also includes some other freeware/shareware like
NorthCAD for building objects. Interested users should also check out the
2Morrow World Builder demo over in CyberForum libraries.
VRT3 is Superscape's latest VR program. It is the most expensive PC based VR
program at several thousand dollars. At this time it does not support any of
the 3d accelerator boards or any non-PC hardware. However, it includes a
complete modeler, scripting system and (optionally) a C/C++ API. Both CDK and
WTK rely on other programs to create & place the objects and a very seasoned
C/C++ programmer to build the world applications.
