Dan,
Looks like someone beat me to starting a dialog on MARS ?! I was going to
start it myself, but I'm a bit consumed with R4-upgrade video driver problems.
I saw a demo of MARS at my (Chicago) User Group meeting. The guys from Daewoo
took it thru its paces and it was very impressive. The only thing that
concerns me is that it must be done at 352 x 240 resolution. Supposedly this
is good enough for SVHS playback but not for anything higher. Will I ever need
to go out to a higher quality? The sound playback is a nice feature, of course
you'll need a sound card, it's in a seperate queue but plays back
simultaneously with the video. Set your two queues – click and enjoy. Pros:
1/2 the price of PAR, easy as can be to install (saw it done in 15 min.), nice
clean playback. Cons: 1/2 the "quality" of PAR (resolution), doesn't deal with
fields rendering, MPEG is a non-editable format – unlike a JPEG string.
I suppose that it depends on how you intend to use it as to just how cool
you'll think it is. If you plan to use it to go S-VHS/VHS tape? – maybe it's
o.k. – at least it would be worth an extra "look-sie". If you use it as a
means to video color check, motion test, in-house demo – again, worth a peek.
If you've got to go out to Beta – got to go PAR, MAX, TARGA2000, etc. I plan
on taking my bosses (the _money_ people <BG>) to see a PAR -vs- MARS demo first
week in January – I guess we'll make a decision shortly after that.
Hope my little bit of info helps you out. If you need/want #'s for Daewoo let
me know – they gave me some lit' – sure they'd love to send you some too 🙂
Gary 🙂
