John, This forum looks very interesting, albeit a bit technical for non technos like me. Anyhow after wading through the disclaimers etc. I was wondering if this would be the best place to get some info. from you very knowledgable chaps !! I have a Hi 8 video recorder and am trying to set up a decent computer based editing system to include frame grabbing, graphics, titles etc. Preferably a system which will allow the sound to be edited seperately ( if this is possible) without loss of quality. I play guitar and attempt keyboards and have various (now old hat) devices for recording and processing (Tascam 244, digital delays etc) and also a Hi 8 Video recorder. I have just bought a computer for home use (Dx266 8meg ram 400m hard disc, cdrom etc) and would like to set it up so that the Sampling and Sequencing software can be used in conjunction with a video editing suite ( yet to be bought). I have no illusions as to my abilities but can afford a reasonable amount to indulge my artistic/creative pretensions. I would therefore like to purchase products that compliment each other. One of the reasons I have not purchased a non-computor editing suite is that I believe it is difficult to do much with the soundtrack as, as opposed to non Hi 8 formats, the soundtrack is not recorded on a seperate "track" and is therefore difficult to re sync when doing multi edits. This presumably means that I would have to lift the whole soundtrack and try and make it fit the pictures. I know this doesn't sound very clear but for example…… I have a video tape of my sons band doing a gig, The sound is o.k. but I want to cut with the soundtrack of one song but the pictures from the different songs ( for Variety) how can it be lifted so that the pictures from the soundtrack song are in sync when mixed with the other images……. Does that make sense or is it a case of, as with multitracking, that you have the different pictures running simnltaneously and just cut and paste as you go along so that the soundtrack is always in sync with the pictures. Its very difficult to express what you mean by this medium!! If any of that makes sense, what do I need in the way of hardware/software to be able to :- 1. Plug in my camcorder, pick all the nice bits, splice them together electronically, add extra sound and fancy effects etc. 2. Take a piece of sound off the Hi 8, make it fit the pictures its been taken from as well as others that have been edited in. Advice on the most suitable video cards ( or whatever it is you think I need 🙂 ) etc. also required. ( what exactly is mpeg and jpeg ) Sorry to be a dill but it gets quite difficult trying to fathom your way through all thats available and make a logical choice when you dont know what your talking about. Any info. thoughts or free gifts greatly appreciated. All the best Simon Prance
