I am in charge of the video services department at Texas Tech University. It is essentially a PR related shop. We produce internal videos for our professors and PSAs and long-form videos for broadcast. We use the NewTek Toaster and S-VHS for our internal communications work and are looking at non-linear systems to help in that area. The Flyer sounds like a good solution, but the local vendor hasn't seen it yet. So, we've been looking at other systems. We use Betacams for our high end work and post in a traditional studio with a Grass Valley 3000, a D2 and the other tricks. Often, the toaster is easier to work with! We want the non-linear system to help in our posting. If we could show our clients a couple of different video edits we could eliminate or reduce those times when a professor or the university president wants a last minute change in either an internal or external project. I'm also looking at digital video options for playback on our campus computer network. Likely any non-linear system we choose will have to be able to save or convert video into MJPEG. The Flyer has its own compression standard, so I'm still weighing all the options. We also might just get a video board and convert the video after posting.
