Oh do I remember being in just your state of bewilderment. I'd
suggest hitting the books. "The Desktop Multimedia Bible" is an
excellent resource with bottom-up discussions of all the technologies
you're getting yourself into, starting with the plain and simple
physics of sound, light, electronics and building up to the
description of hardware, protocol standards and software.
