The intense competition in the clone market was a result of IBM either not enforcing their patent right, or not be able to for some reason (I have never heard a good explanation for this, anybody know?). The base technology was not good, but competition has lead to clones that maximize the meager potential of the techonology. So competition did produce a superior product, in its own restricted domain.
