The claim of D2 quality is not, "totally subjective", as you state.
Anyone with technical experience in video can tell you exactly what D2
quality means: Composite video sampled at 4Fsc (4 times the color
sub-carrier frequency) which is about 14mhz, with 8- or sometimes 10-bit
samples. The term boradcast quality has lost meaning at the hends of the
marketers, but there is the RS-170A spec for broadcast-legal video. Maybe
some of your fear and cynicism are clouding your judgement; noone expects
a 100% safety net when they buy cutting-edge technology, they expect a
competitive advantage in return for their risk. Otherwise they'd just now
be considering putting a toaster in their beta-sp suites.
