Hi, I'm Brad Jensen of Electronic Storage Corporation.
We are using the first Intel Video board with its video capture software to
create AVIs. Then we import them into Asymetrix Multimedia Toolbook. Running
under Windows 3.1.
These run great from the hard drive. We are taking stuff off of video tape,
putting it out at 160 by whatever, and then playing the clips back thru
toolbook.
The problem comes when we write it to recordable CD-ROM. We can't get any
decent playback from a dual speed CD-ROM. We tried reducing the frame rate to
20fps, reducing the sound from 22kstereo to 8-bit 11k mono. Next we are going
to try the highest compression ratio for the video (we have been recording at
lowest compression/highest quality).
At comdex we saw lots of MPEG decompression boards for full-screen video. We
don't really need that. We can stand the little window INDEO gives us, but we
have to figure out how to get the video size down to something that makes
people talking look like they are speaking English, not Chinese!
I noticed somebody has a AVI cleaner-upper listed in the Windows/NT tools area.
Has anybody tried it? What about this FAST Video Machine? Does it do MPEG? Can
you play back MPEG less than full screen without a special bopard, say on a
486/33 with a dual-speed CD-ROM?
What does the FAST VM cost?
Our design criteria is based around dual-speed CD-ROM, 16 bit sound card,
Windows 3.1, 486 PC for playback. How we get something to view is less
important.
