You might ask about the lempel-Zev algorithm over in either DDJFORUM or
CLMFORUM. (GO DDJFOR and GO CLMFOR, respectively). I think they may even have
the source code for ARC in one of them, and it includes a lempel-Zev
compression scheme. If no luck there, perhaps the UNIXFORUM couls help (GO
UNIXFOR).
