Yes, this is the way Apple protected its ROMs. Similarly, an Amiga clone
will surely need Amiga ROMs. Why don't they just protect the ROMs? Apple
doesn't turn the screws on all their other parts, do they? And Apple
eventually *helped* their clone makers. This whole clone story doesn't make
sense – a portable is hardly feasible with the power consumption of the
present chipsets, OEMs have been able to buy Amiga motherboards of all
types since the machine's inception. If they did set out to protect
themselves from this, why wouldn't they state that explicitly?
Of course there are other things to worry about. I'm sure they'll get
here, too little, too late. 🙂
