Hilary: I have had pretty good success with many "hard to transplant" crops such as chinese cabbage by starting them in individual peat pots or jiffy 7'S. Since you plant pot and all there is no root disturbance. I use plantable pots for a lot of my starts and have had excellent results. The only caution is to avoid shock when moving the plants from a protected environment to the great outdoors. It's a good idea to harden the plants off before planting out for good and put out in the ground only when the weather is reasonably suitable for the type of plant. Some kinds of greens transplant easily bare rooted from flats but there are so many diffrent kinds that if you don't know how yours behaves, the pot and all method is the safest,even though it may not be absolutly necessary.
