Actually, after I broke one chip puller by trying to adjust the tooth on it, I found that you could get by with a single paper clip bent in the same shape as the teeth on the puller to go in and LIFT the chip up. No prying is done. In your case you were lucky. People in any hurry *WILL* break the socket. Hence my strong advice to people on letting someone do the job professionally.
