Once again I keep referring back to what I know (wavefront). They have a quick render mode on a frame in Preview (basically a jaggy render) that lets you see what the image will look like. But they also have a quick-shade mode which pretty much lets you know how your lights are set up. And this is fast enough to render during frame changes (animation). The battle here is hot & heavy for both sides (Imagine & Caligari). I'll see if I can find the $30 book on Imagine and see what's up. -Glenn-
