David – Layer names and linetypes names must conform to AutoCAD's symbol naming conventions, meaning that they must contain only letters, digits, and the special characters $, _, and -. They cannot be more than 31 characters long, and cannot be blank. See pages 263 ("Layer name" at the bottom of the page) and 276 ("Each linetype…" in the middle of the page). Rather than ask why DXFIN won't allow your blank or "()" symbols to be input, I wonder how you're managing to create such layers and linetypes in the first place. The LAYER and LINETYPE commands are (supposed to) check the vaildity of the names you enter, as are the AutoLISP/Ads (entmake) and (entmod) functions… so I'm at a loss as to how these names are getting into your drawing. Sounds like a bug. Can you elucidate?
