The voice mail aspect of this is fascinating. I'd guess it works like this: you pick up the phone and activate the software and it can record your outgoing message. Then, when someone calls, the modem can recognize DTMF touchtones and pass them to the software. And then it can digitize the incoming phone call and record it to disk. (I realize all of this has to be powered by host software, of course.)
