Definitely a concept with some bugs in its conception. The ease of use theme is often frustrated in AmigaBASIC, but I am quite sure it will spawn the most powerful basic programs we have ever seen, especially when we give it 2 megabytes of memory to play with. Then we can make liberal use of the Call statements to get to ROM and also many many basic subprograms until an absolute minimum of programming is necessary to connect an outrageously wide connection of building blocks, all neatly labeled and indexed. Of course, you could also do that in C, but it wouldn't be as accessible to the general public. I am very interested in building a large library of basic subprograms which could easily be put together by the average computer user to create his/her very own program with very little knowledge. Of course, that's a lot of work away and perhaps an impossible ideal, but that's the potential I see and the direction I would love to see it take. No other basic could approach the power, popularity and accessibility of such a setup. That's one reason I am so interested in building up .bmap files, to allow as many large routines to be easily called from basic as possible, then to build up libraries of modules for standard set-up routines for any given screen, window, memory requirement, color combination, and so on through the gamut of program segments which it is possible to modularize and generalize, then pass parameters to. Right now, the embarrassment of riches tends to confuse rather than simplify–but f enough chunks of a program could be combined from a clearly defined set of routines, well, it would be a dream come true! Basic isn't the fastest or even the best way, but there's something to be said for the incredible clarity that AmigaBASIC can achieve. I truly hope it lives up to some of that promise. Don W.
