No. 4 bitplanes – ApAssist uses hires, lace or nonlace, 4 bitplane displays because that is the highest common denominator available on ALL Amiga hardware. Within the 16 colors that are available in a 4 bitplane display, we've defined 8 grey levels and 8 colors. The first four colors are similar to the default WB colors, so that the windows look "normal". The other colors were carefulloy picked to meet a general rendering need. The reason that it does not allow anoy other display mode is so that it can assure you, the end user, that images and animations are presented in the correct aspect ratio; the reason that the display screen is a constant number of colors is the same – so the images and animations look as good as possible, given the minimum Amiga hardware target.
