Jay Miner, general manager of Commodore-Amiga, responded late yesterday to concern over reported layoffs within Commodore with the following official statement: "Commodore International has had heavy layoffs. These layoffs have been uniformly distributed over all positions and have been necessary for an overall reduction in staff. "The Amiga division's losses have come almost completely from management and engineering support services. Commodore and Amiga are continuing to support the Amiga computer, and development of new products is continuing at Amiga. "Except for a few people who quit a few months ago, we've lost almost no people in either the software or hardware engineering divisions. Those that we have lost have been basically quality assurance, management, and documentation. "The layoffs were necessitated by a need to meet certain budget figures."
