I'm making a guess here, but… The front/back gadgets in the upper left of the blanked screen are just that- screen gadgets. It sounds like he's opened up a black screen to cover the view, to darken you monitor. He must have just forgotten to make the BackDropWindow full size, and therefore hiding the gadgets. As to the seemingly random times between blanks- probably mouse movements count as input, so you would have to not bump your desk for the time you are waiting. — Colin —
