Dave and Ed,
Those are referred to as random dot stereograms, or RDS. Check
out the Graphics developers forum here on CIS, they have a couple of
shareware programs that'll make 'em. I downloaded one called RDSGEN a
few months back that lets you give it a greyscale image, and it will
turn it into an RDS. The darker the shade in the original image, the
further that area will recede into the distance. There's even a trick
that will let you use scenes done in 3DS and turn those into 3d pics.
