I don't know that he "sold them the whole shebang" so much as he ran into the "work made for hire" laws in this country. There are a number of groups of disaffected artists and "creators" in various fields who have campaigns for creators rights. History is full of people (like the creators of Superman) who died nearly broke while the company who _entirely_ owned the rights to these people's creations (simply because they worked there and created the "product" while there) raked in millions and millions.
