Tsk, tsk. Gamma rays are ionizing radiation, but interact through Compton
scattering, pair production, and the photoelectric effect (and a couple more
minor mechanisms). Beta particles _can_ result from neutron capture, but I
don't suppose you have a fission reactor in your basement. 😉
BTW, the tenth thickness (reduce gamma flux to 10% of incident) for a typical 1
Mev gamma is about 2" of lead, 4" of steel, or 24" of water — so plan on
having sturdy furniture and a heavy duty foundation if you're going to get
serious about shielding your beige box.
