OK, I'm done being overtly cynical, I'll return to my normal level. I
agree with your points. If I use a shareware product, I start thinking
about paying for it. I must admit, I don't always, but that's part of the
shareware game, isn't it? I don't give quarters to every street musician I
listen to. Whether or not he has covered his business or living expenses
should make absolutely no difference to my purchase, so his newsletter plea
seems no more than a plea for charity.
To say that a product is freely distributable and useable up to a certain
point, and then beyond that point, you must send in money, doesn't make a
lot of sense to me as a business premise. It is interesting to me that
shareware authors and pirates think of software in the same way: If they
think a product is useful, they'll buy it. Shareware is a risky venture at
best. Selling it would at least mean a dribble of cash. If UEdit is so
hot, why not sell it, but make a demo version freely distributable? Ads in
Amazing Computing are less than, oh, $300 a quarter page.
