Thanks for agreeing, Don. 🙂 I think shareware is an excellent way for a
freelance programmer to gain a reputation. I think a public domain disk
collection is a good way to get your name known, too. I don't think people
should sacrifice their talents in any way. This may sound funny, but I
don't like the concept of public domain, because I think it has encouraged
people to give up their lifeblood, their cherished creations. Look at
DirUtil, and how it became CLImate, and how CLImate sales are stifled by
its own progeny. There are many programs I have written that couldn't be
sold or marketed, so I give them away. It doesn't mean that I should
always give away my products, or that I am forced to in any way. I don't
like the idea of people thinking they'll be the next Andy Fluegelman by
giving away an editor.
