Erik, I purchased the Amiga 500 and found it to be a great buy. You don't really need the expansion card but it would really help I guess. I wouldn't know becaus I've gone about 6 months without one so far. However, I am planning on purchasin g one soon. Alot of software (good software) requires it and also if you plan on doing some serious multitasking, I'm sure it's VERY helpful. As far as the 1701, I'm not too sure. When I first got my Amiga, I hooked mine up to a 1702 and I've heard their about the same. It will work with the 500 if you use the RF (I think) jack on the back of the Amiga and hook it into the Chromo (I think, again) If not, then try the other. Or, if the 1701 has a front input, put it into the video jack. BUT, the only thing you will sacrafice is the color, but look on the bright side, you have 4,096 shades of grey! Seriously, that will do until you get enough cash for a color monitor. I've also heard about the RF modulator but I don't know the details so I'll leave it up to some one else. I hope I helped, and I'm sure I left out something that some one else can fill in. -Tim
