Thanks for the reply – before I even had a chance to address a message to you!
a few comments:

I would have to disagree with you here. If I've got accurate drawings to work
from, I find it very simple to build meshes. Using an actual rifle (which it
sounds like I'll end up doing 🙁 just adds an additional step for me –
instead of reading a dimension off a drawing, I've got to measure, write and
then read.
Since I am building this to be the M24, the barrel, scope mount and scope are
rather important elements – as well as the adjustable stock.
