It's entirely true that some rivers and lakes follow fault lines. California's Kern river for example clearly follows a fault across the slope of the Sierra Nevada until it swings West to flow out into the Central Valley. OTOH the Hudson, Lake Champlain Richelieu River System follow a normal fault at the South End, but appears to be controlled by the leading edge of hard Cambrian rocks thrust faulted over soft Ordovician rocks over much of it's length. And the Mohawk river just follows the natural exposure of soft Utica shales all the way from Herkimer to Albany.
