Leland- The movement of the north american plate is not all released at the plate boundary. There is stress throughout the plate and some can re released within a plate. Another more interesting possibility is that there is actually a plate boundary lurking around on the east coast. This idea is not all that popular with the hard-core plate tectonic crowd.
