Saw your questions and thought I'd throw in my two cents worth. I just bought
the Mimetics Sound Sampler and am still fooling around with it. Although the
literature says that the sample rates can be changed, I have yet to figure it
out. It does, however, work very well on digitizing, and I have to admit I
haven't got into the music end of any of this.
I have a lot of questions too, that I am trying to get answered on CIS,
PLINK, and BIX about some kind of standards as to sampling rates (maybe!) and
I, being a telecom eng., would like to know if anyone has any ideas as to
some form of companding to make this thing not eat up memory like its going
out of style!
The Memetics will sample up to your maximum memory you have on your machine
(although I don't know if having more than 512K will be seen by the software)
But it helps to be having nothing else running while your digitizing, that
was around 20 seconds is available.
But at an 18K per second sampling rate it takes a HUGE chunk of disk space to
save it. I would think that if some people with some smarts out there im
programming (definately not me!) were to get together with some people with
digital telecom experience (me or others), we could get the sampling rate
down to 3K or better with a really good companding system that would give
good s/n and distortion figures, and fair enoungh frequency response. Any
ideas out there? ?
